With just four months under my belt at Liverpool Cares, I look at the community network my colleagues have been building in our city over the past twelve months with immense pride.
The welcoming support I've received – from my team, the older and younger neighbours I've had the pleasure of meeting, and also from the wider community who are helping to raise those all-important funds to bring growth to Liverpool Cares – has been humbling.
Our first birthday party completely encompassed what Liverpool Cares is all about, but the kindness and generosity of the community all around us began way before the night of the party.
Owen, the master baker from Kensington Bread Company where we host a monthly Breadmaking Social Club, kindly organised the donation of our beautiful birthday cake from his pals at Cake Company. After a cry of "Let them eat cake!" from our fabulous older neighbour, Linda, older and younger neighbours alike enjoyed a lovely slice of this wonderful cake.
Not only that, but our friends at Glacial Art Ice Sculptors gifted us a magnificent ice sculpture. Our green Liverpool Cares logo was a perfect welcoming sight for older, younger and new neighbours arriving at the party.
Hosting the evening, and providing warmth and wit, were younger neighbours Jackie J and Millie. Both spent the evening laughing with older and younger neighbours, taking our guests from those first welcomes right through to the last song of the night and showing passion and enthusiasm for what Liverpool Cares is building across the city.
The evening commenced in spectacular style with the fantastic magician, Barrington Powell, who performed breathtaking magic tricks and illusions for a stunned crowd. Alma (76) was left speechless as he pulled her £10 note from a kiwi that younger neighbour Charlotte had been holding all night.
Younger neighbour David (28), nicknamed ‘Tricky Dave’ in his youth for his love of magic, was left massively impressed by Barrington's sleight of hand.
The laughter and applause filled the room from start to finish. Next up was the much-anticipated quiz, which saw older and younger neighbour coming together to share their wealth of knowledge, or (self-admitted) lack thereof! Phones were confiscated across the generations as the temptation to peek became too strong for some. Younger neighbours Danny and Tennessee teamed up with older neighbours Dot and Peter to take home the first place quiz prize of a £50 bar tab, kindly donated by the Baltic Market.
Older and younger neighbours also enjoyed a raffle filled with extremely generous prizes, including a two night stay with a three-course meal at our favourite Social Club singalong venue Novotel Liverpool Centre Liverpool, two tickets to Western Approaches HQ - The Battle of the Atlantic Experience, a month's membership (including three personal training sessions) at JD Gyms - Liverpool, and a box wine donated by Barefoot Wine & Bubbly. We could not be more grateful for these kind donations!
And finally a huge thanks to goes to James Hood Photo for capturing our special moments during the evening. It felt like you had always been a part of our network and we were so grateful to see the ease with which you captured the essence of our community.
The was held on the iconic Albert Dock at Revolucion de Cuba, thank you to the staff for helping everything run smoothly.
We want to take this opportunity to thank every single person who attended, shared laughs, danced, bought raffle tickets, pin badges, tote bags and took part in the quiz as every pound donated makes such massive difference to our charity.
With your help, we raised £566 on the night and we are so chuffed.
Thank you for your continued generosity, love and support. Every kind word you spread through your networks, social media pictures you 'like' and share, every business you recommend us to, or daring challenge you take on our behalf, all contributes towards the growth of Liverpool Cares.
We could not be more grateful. Here's to the next twelve months and beyond!
