In her first blog Rachael, our new Development Coordinator, shares what inspired her to be involved with Liverpool Cares and how excited she is to secure the all important funds that make our work possible.
I have been working for Liverpool Cares for just over two weeks now. I started with three of the most inspiring days training in London and finished a really special first week with my amazing team in our Liverpool home.
When I saw the opportunity to come and work with Liverpool Cares and The Cares Family in the city where I was born, lived and have such rich family history I couldn't have been more excited.
Love Your Neighbour is the project that inspires me to want to fundraise for Liverpool Cares the most. Getting older, losing friends and family, alongside a deterioration in physical health, can make people incredibly isolated. Families can be fragmented, and the fear of the fast-paced world affects both younger and older neighbours. From my experience bringing these communities together makes perfect sense.
In my previous role, I had the pleasure of taking exercise classes with older neighbours. This role put me in a privileged position to gain trust and gather an understanding of how these older neighbours experienced the world.
As a person with an analogue childhood and digital adulthood, it was easy for me to relate to older neighbours when they told me about the changes to their communities and the challenges they had with the progressive digitalisation of services they had previously found more accessible.
For many, the exercise class I led might’ve been the only social interaction they had all week. Love Your Neighbour really helps me see what can happen next when coming out of your home alone is difficult or impossible.
Finally, I’d like you to meet my Nan, who was born in the Dingle in 1937. Now 82 years old, she said to me the other week that Lark Lane isn't her ‘scene’! Now that I’m working for Liverpool Cares I’m super excited to help her see it still could be her scene.
My first two weeks have been jam-packed with attending some of the wonderful social clubs that we have here at Liverpool Cares, where young and older neighbours come together to explore and share their city. A highlight was the brilliant Craft Club over in Kensington. As we mastered basket weaving we were gobsmacked to learn that older neighbour Kathy (74) enjoys ‘Love Island’ more than all of her younger neighbours. Breaking down misconceptions is a daily joy.
We did not stop chatting and laughing all night, and we were genuinely not ready to go home at the end.
As Development Coordinator, I’m here to raise the funds to support all of our amazing projects. If you are inspired by the work we do and would like to get involved there are so many ways you can fundraise. I’m very excited to cheer on our challenge fundraisers completing the Liverpool Cathedral Abseil in August, and I will be getting my RED Santa suit on to compete in the amazing Santa Dash alongside you all this year.
Please get in touch if you would like to get involved, or just hear more about what we do.
