I love Liverpool. It’s full to the brim with interesting, energetic, side-splittingly funny people. People have come from all over the globe to create this culture-rich melting pot which I am immensely proud to say I am a part of. But, as with all big cities, it’s changing – and fast. I find it overwhelming at times; one minute I’m in my favourite local cafe having a cup of tea and reading the paper, the next day the sign has changed and I have to brew the tea (whose name I can’t pronounce) myself in an unusual shaped teapot with different chambers inside and an egg timer next to it. I can’t begin to imagine what it must feel like for Liverpool’s older community.
I found myself wanting to be a part of something which benefits the lovely people of this city, so I started to work with a local business, Independent Liverpool which promotes the independents of Liverpool. Through that I met lots of fascinating people and made great connections across the city, and now I’m more passionate than ever about championing Scousers and bringing people together.
So I was so delighted to find out about Liverpool Cares. I’d heard about the Cares Family and its community networks in Manchester, south London and north London and was bubbling to join up with them in some way. Fast forward to my first week here as Social Clubs Officer, and I’m already champing at the bit to get going and make some history of our own. I know Liverpool will benefit from bringing our older neighbours together with younger volunteers, enhancing the sense of community and friendship which can be so easily lost with the rapid changes we’re seeing.
As Social Clubs Officer at Liverpool Cares, I’ll be organising and leading exciting social clubs across the city so that our neighbours and volunteers can learn from each other, share experiences, laughter and friendship – I’d love it if you joined us.
You can sign up to get involved here. See you at one of our pub clubs, Desert Island Discs evenings, or quiz nights soon!
