Danny is a volunteer with Liverpool Cares, and has decided to take on an epic cycle ride in aid of the charity. Find out what inspired him to get on his bike.
I found out about Liverpool Cares through a Facebook post, and thought it sounded like an amazing thing to do. I used to work with older adults in care homes linking them up with volunteers on a 1:1 basis around their hobbies and interests, and I’ve done quite a bit of volunteering before through Childline, the Samaritans and with different sports clubs.
I signed up and haven’t looked back since! It’s really upsetting thinking about older adults who are lonely or isolated, who feel that TV is their main form of TV; I’ve felt lonely before and it’s not a nice feeling, and I wouldn’t wish that on anyone else.
So far I’ve met some amazing neighbours at some of the social groups - Alma has had me in stitches playing Cluedo, we were discussing Yorkshire life with Sylvia whilst helping her with her laptop, and it’s always a pleasure spending time with Kathy - that’s just three people of the top of my head, but I’ve learnt so much from other neighbours whilst spending time with them - like about life in Liverpool, history and people coming from other cultures and ways of life. I’m also hopeful to have a 1:1 weekly catch up with an older neighbour soon!
It’s been a while since I’ve done a fundraising campaign, and basically I’m too much of a chicken to do an abseil down the Anglican Cathedral so I chose something that’s in my comfort zone – although I’ve only ever done about 57 miles in one go on one day, so this is a big step up! I wanted to do this fundraiser for Liverpool Cares specifically because I’ve seen first hand the work that the staff do and the impact that it has for neighbours and volunteers - anything that I can do to help them on their way makes me really happy, and I’m really proud to be raising money and awareness for Liverpool Cares.
I'm challenging myself to cycle 260 miles across the north of England in five days starting on the 2nd September, setting off from Liverpool and finishing in Hornsea (near Hull). I'm aiming to raise £520 - that's £2 for every mile that I cycle. I’m really excited to do something that I’ve not done before in a long bike ride, and 90% of the route I’ve never seen before - I can’t wait to cycle over the Humber Bridge near the end of the ride, ride through the Peak District and of course that feeling that I’ll get when I cross the finish line. I’m sticking to a fairly tight schedule of how many miles I’m doing a day and where I’ll be staying, so I’m a bit worried about if my bike needs repairing or the weather is against me, but whatever will be will be, it just makes it a bit more interesting
If anyone has any dosh that they’d like to throw in the kitty then that would be hugely appreciated - you can donate online through the following link: https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/DannyLiverpoolCares
